Hamilton’s Grandmothers of Steel We are proud to be a member group of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF). The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, begun in 2006 in Canada, now has groups in England, Australia and the USA. We honour the following statements: “Nothing about us without us.” —South Africa Statement “We will not rest until they can rest.” —Toronto Statement We respect the SLF values of social justice, international solidarity and substantive equality. Our Mission Grandmothers and grandothers in Canada learn continually from grandmothers in Africa, act in deeply felt solidarity with them, amplify their voices and affirm their goals, values, and expertise. We embrace a shared commitment to respond effectively to the AIDS pandemic in Africa in ways that harness the strength, determination, resilience, creativity, resourcefulness and wisdom of both groups. |
Our Vision The Stephen Lewis Foundation envisions an equitable and just world where all people’s right to health is realized. The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign supports the vision presented in the Ugandan Grandmothers Statement: “...a future in which our families and communities are thriving and have left the ravages of AIDS behind.” (2015) Our focus is women, most notably grandmothers who are working to sustain a healthy future for themselves, their families and their communities. Our Aims - Raise awareness about the expertise and leadership of grandmothers in Africa and build solidarity to understand and sustain the vital work being done to turn the tide of AIDS in Africa. - Raise funds for the SLF’s work with community-based partners who provide support to African grandmothers and the children in their care. - Strengthen, sustain and grow the movement to invite a diverse group of members and supporters into the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. |

Arriving at our name and purpose:
The first step for many organizations in sub-Saharan Africa is to bring local grandmothers together. Living in an environment of crisis and scarcity and facing stigma makes connecting very difficult. Creating structured, neutral spaces for grandmothers to meet is key to breaking the isolation. Alicia found strength by sharing her story with other grandmothers through Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS (GAPA), South Africa. She said, “Together, we became strong, like grandmothers of steel.” Although our name, 'Grandmothers of Steel' suits Hamilton, the 'Steel City', we have taken our name from Alicia’s words as a constant reminder of the strength and determination of the grandmothers in Africa. Our group is open to all women who share the spirit of the grandmothers in Africa, in fighting for gender equality, social justice, health-care, education and economic security. In 2008, the City of Hamilton Mundialization Committee honoured us with the world citizenship award.
